During the first two weeks of September 2025 Hilary Cox and I were taking part in the Spatial Festival in Monom Studios and Funkhaus Berlin, where we designed an audiovisual installation in the Sound Chamber along with the Monom team — Zap Bain and Victor Calvi — and audio spatialisation from 4Dsound.

The installation also included a sub transducer floor from Rob Blake, gongs from 3Ω collective and a sculpture contributed by NAKEDSPACE.

The installation ‘Resonant Studies’ consisted of fourteen resonant objects such gongs, scaffolding elements and metal plates utilised as electroacoustic resonators, each receiving a separate audio feed in a multichannel setup with live spatialised audio streamed from the performances taking place in Saal 2.

The Sound Chamber, with its large size of almost six hundred square meters, was originally constructed as a resonant body above the recording halls to add an additional layer of acoustic isolation and control sound reflections. The installation ‚Resonant Studies‘ amplified and reimagined this concept by live streaming audio directly from Saal 2 through fourteen resonant objects, transforming the chamber from a passive acoustic absorber into an active resonant instrument. The resonant qualities of each element, combined with the chamber’s natural acoustics, created a sort of eerie, spectral and deconstructed double of the pristine sound of the spatial sound system below.

Along with the multichannel resonant audio setup, I designed an audio responsive lighting system that followed the amplitude of each object further highlighting the movement of sound in space.

Apart from the space of ‘Resonant Studies’ it was a great pleasure to take care of the lighting for the entire festival.
